Volunteering with Missio Ireland

An important part of our work is raising awareness of mission and the needs of missionaries overseas. We couldn’t do this without the volunteers on our local mission teams. Volunteering with Missio Ireland is a chance to work with, and meet, others who share your values and beliefs. It will also be an opportunity to learn more about the work we do so you can share that knowledge with others. As a volunteer with Missio Ireland you can help us reach out in solidarity, and with hope, to other missionaries who are aiding struggling faith communities in their daily challenges.

Our Mission Teams

Most dioceses in Ireland have a Mission Team, which is co-ordinated by a Diocesan Director for Mission. Our volunteers’ motivations for being on a Mission Team vary. Some have been on mission overseas, others have volunteered with aid agencies and organisations, whilst some simply wish to support the work of missionaries overseas through prayer and awareness raising in their parish.

What Mission Teams Do

In essence, our Mission Teams help promote mission awareness and the work of Missio Ireland in parishes across Ireland. Missio Ireland produce resources each year for Mission Teams to use in parishes, especially during the mission month of October and on World Mission Sunday.

Mission awareness can be done in very simple ways. Some of our Mission Teams have organised ‘Meet a Missionary’ coffee mornings, or a parish mission walk. Others have invited returned missionaries and volunteers who have worked overseas to speak in their parish, or they have held exhibitions on where local missionaries are serving overseas and the contribution they are making to transforming the lives of others.

Local primary and secondary schools have been invited to take part in projects highlighting the work of overseas missionaries and some have been encouraged to hold simple fundraisers for child-centred projects being supported by Missio.

Ultimately, each Mission Team finds different ways to highlight overseas mission and World Mission Sunday during the mission month of October.

How Often do Mission Teams Meet?

Most Mission teams meet approximately four times a year. Currently, this happens digitally by Zoom.
